Analysis of Interviews Conducted on Spare Time
Similarities and differences of the interviews of parents
Similarities and differences between the interviews of parents and grandparents:
Similarities and differences between two grandparents
Final Conclusions:
Today’s life is very busy, so the amount of spare time is less for our parents compared to grandparents. Mostly our grandmothers were housewives with lot of leisure time, but now women are working and find it hard to balance between spare time and work time. Leisure time meant a lot of fun activities amongst close family members and lot of time to bond together. Changing times have cut out precious “no work time” and there is less spare time than ever. We came to a conclusion that grandparents had around 4 to 5 hours of spare time, but parents have only 1 to 2 hours in today’s time. So as time marches forward, work load increases and spare time decreases, we lose the strong bond and touch with our families.
- Similarities:
- Most of their mothers were housewives.
- They all have nuclear families.
- They mostly get 2-3 hours of spare time daily.
- Their spare time is mostly used in spending time with their families.
- Differences:
- A few had nuclear families from the start, but few had joint families and then changed into nuclear families.
- The number of people in each household varied.

- Similarities:
- Both the generations mothers were housewives and both spend their time with their family or for playing outside.
- They were both exposed to open fields and enjoyed the outdoors.
- Both the generations enjoyed the company of extended families for the greater part of their lives.
- Differences:
- The grandparents had 5-6 hours of spare time while the parents had 1-2 hours of spare time. So the grandparents had more spare time than the parents.
- The grandparents mostly used to spend their time by helping their mothers in household chores whereas the parents used to often spend their spare time by playing outdoor games with friends. So the parents were more sportive than the grandparents.
- There weren't many wars and historical events in the time of the parents’ childhood, but grandparents’ childhood there was a lot of violence and riots going on which led to many deaths including some of their own family members and also poverty. The grandparents were really scared as it wasn't safe at all.Though the two generations had different lifestyles they always had their relatives with them for support as they all lived together.

Our Experience:
We were honoured to be a part of this very interesting and fun project. We are usually not exposed to this kind of activities during our daily lives, but this was something totally different! We enjoyed a lot while interviewing the parents and grandparents, and we also learnt a a lot of new things which hadn't even given a thought about. This was a great way to compare and contrast between what has changed in this world, which is advancing everyday, and give a thought about it for a minute, and even that made a great impact on the way we took the world. A few things have changed to become better, a few have become more inferior. But the way the world is perceived by the three generations is very different. But the world also depends on our attitude and mood. The choice is ours: we can accept the world in a beautiful way, and work on the things that can make it a better society, a better place to live, or we can take the world for granted, ignore its needs, and watch it fall before our eyes.
